The period procession and races along the Grand Canal.

Since 1315: sixteenth-century ceremonial boats with costumed rowers open the gondolini races. The cheering from the banks rivals a stadium. Best spots: Rialto and the floating "machina" at Ca' Foscari.

Masks, palaces and the Flight of the Angel: the world's most elegant carnival.

Officially revived in 1979 after nearly two centuries of silence, it fills the lanes and squares with eighteenth-century costumes. Highlights: the opening water parade, the best-mask contest in St Mark's Square, and the balls held in private palaces.
