The oldest written record is a parchment of 1067, and it already says everything: Tollo appears there as a village that produced wine, sold through the nearby port of Ortona. From the same year comes a deed of donation naming the castle of Tollo as a boundary, which undoes the tradition that the place was founded a little later by a band of crusaders from Tulle, in France: the castle was already there. In the fifteenth century the Teutonic Order arrived, and to them the church of Santa Marina is owed; around 1566 came the supposed Turkish raid, from which the feast of the Madonna del Rosario and the re-enactment of the siege were born.

From October 1941 Tollo held a fascist internment camp, where mostly Slav communists were shut up: as many as ninety people, in an ordinary dwelling in the middle of the village, which for that very reason guaranteed neither security nor hygiene and was closed in the summer of 1943; the internees were moved to the camps of Corropoli and Bagno a Ripoli. Then the war destroyed the village: the first bombs on the night of the fifth of December 1943, the people first in shelters dug into the sandstone and then evacuated, in the night between the fourteenth and the fifteenth of December. Recovery came with two farming cooperatives, in 1960 and 1962.
