Friuli Venezia Giulia

4 provinces · 215 towns · Population: 1,220,291

Wedged between the Alps, the Adriatic and two borders, Friuli-Venezia Giulia is frontier country in the best sense. In Trieste — once the Habsburg empire's port — coffee is ordered in a vocabulary all its own inside grand historic cafés, while Aquileia preserves the largest early-Christian mosaic floor in the West, UNESCO-listed since 1998. The Collio hills produce some of Italy's most respected white wines; Cividale keeps the traces of the Lombard kings.

Tourism hasn't worn anything down here yet. That's the advantage of arriving now.
