The name comes from a people who arrived here after the middle of the second millennium BC, the Veneti. Today it is the fourth Italian region by population, with 563 comuni in seven provinces, and the only one in the North-East to border Austria; it is also one of the most visited regions in Europe, with almost seventy million tourist overnight stays a year. Venice is the capital, but Verona is only a few thousand inhabitants behind it: Veneto has no single capital.
Venice and its lagoon have been a UNESCO site since 1987, but Veneto is much more than its masterpiece: an hour away are the Roman Arena of Verona, which since 1913 has staged opera under the stars, the villas Andrea Palladio scattered through the countryside, and the Prosecco hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, recognised by UNESCO in 2019. Padua keeps the frescoes of Giotto, and to the north the Belluno Dolomites close the horizon. It is a region you drink and walk, from the lagoon to the Tre Cime.
