Veneto

7 provinces · 563 towns · Population: 4,855,904

There is far more to Veneto than its masterpiece. Venice and its lagoon have been a UNESCO site since 1987, but within an hour you reach Verona's Roman Arena, staging opera under the stars since 1913, the country villas of Andrea Palladio, and the Prosecco hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, UNESCO-listed in 2019. Padua keeps Giotto's frescoes; the Belluno Dolomites close the horizon to the north.

This is a region you drink — spritz, prosecco, Amarone — and walk, from the lagoon's sandbanks to the Tre Cime peaks.
