Piedmont is the region that made Italy: from Turin, the Kingdom's first capital between 1861 and 1865, unification set out. It is the second Italian region by area and the second by number of comuni — there are 1181, spread over eight provinces — and it is also the westernmost in the country: it borders France and Switzerland, as well as four Italian regions. The land runs from the Alps, which close it on three sides, to the plain of the Po, which rises here.
The Savoy elegance of the capital lives alongside a countryside with no rivals at table. The hills of Langhe, Roero and Monferrato have been a UNESCO site since 2014 and produce Barolo and Barbaresco from the nebbiolo grape; at Alba, in autumn, the most prized white truffle in the world is traded. The advice is to come in October: fog on the vines, new wine, and the historic cafés of Turin as a refuge when it rains.
