Piedmont

8 provinces · 1,181 towns · Population: 4,363,916

Piedmont, at the foot of the Alps, is where modern Italy began: Turin served as the country's first capital from 1861 to 1865, and the region still carries a certain royal composure. Its countryside, though, is the real aristocracy. The Langhe, Roero and Monferrato hills — a UNESCO site since 2014 — grow the nebbiolo grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco, while Alba hosts the world's most serious white truffle market every autumn.

Come in October if you can: fog over the vineyards, new wine, and Turin's historic cafés waiting at the end of the day.
