Sardinia is the third Italian region by area and the third from last by density: there are 377 comuni and vast tracts where nobody lives at all, so much so that the island has been called a microcontinent. First came the nuraghi — seven thousand Bronze Age stone towers, with Su Nuraxi at Barumini a UNESCO site since 1997 — and they tell of a civilisation that resembles no other in Europe. The region has had a special statute since 1948, its capital is Cagliari, and it also takes in many smaller archipelagos.
The rest is an island that changes every fifty kilometres: the turquoise of the Costa Smeralda, launched in the nineteen-sixties by the Aga Khan, the dunes of Piscinas, the cliffs of Cala Goloritzé, and the inland Barbagia where the Sardinian language is spoken. In Ogliastra people really do live long: it is one of the blue zones of longevity recognised worldwide. And the diet is that one — pane carasau, pecorino and cannonau — served with a sea view.
