"Sulmo mihi patria est": Ovid was born here in 43 BC and his city has never stopped repeating it — the poet's statue watches over Piazza XX Settembre. Sulmona is also the world capital of the confetto: the historic factories, Pelino first with its museum, have composed flowers and bouquets of sugared almonds for centuries.
The medieval aqueduct frames Piazza Garibaldi, where at Easter the "Running Madonna" races through the crowd and in July the Giostra Cavalleresca revives the tournaments. Around, the Peligna valley and the Majella park: bears, Celestine hermitages, stone villages.
