Saint Nicholas of Bari, patron of Lattarico
📅 Every year, on 6 December
Lattarico celebrates Saint Nicholas of Bari on 6 December, in the church dedicated to him.
Lattarico has 4,058 inhabitants on a hilly stretch of the inner side of the Coastal Range, looking out over the valley of the Crati. The name has three layers of language: the Greeks and the Romans called the place Ocriculum, from the Oscan-Umbrian ocris, which means mountain; then the name passed to a Roman landowner, Lattaricus, and from him to the village; in Byzantine Greek it was said Lachtarikòn. Three peoples, a single place.
Below the village stretches the valley of the Crati, a long narrow basin closed by the Sila to the east and by the Coastal Range to the west, where little wind arrives and thermal inversion is almost the rule: cold nights, scorching summers, and plenty of snow in the higher sectors. The railway station carries the name of Lattarico but is not at Lattarico: it is called Torano-Lattarico and stands in the neighbouring comune's territory. The municipal coat of arms came late, in 2008.
