Saint Lawrence the Martyr, patron of the town

San Lorenzo del Vallo has 3,465 inhabitants in the valley of the Esaro, between Castrovillari and Tarsia. Sea shells are found in the territory, and indeed it is thought that in remote times this whole plain was under the sea. The name, on the other hand, comes from the Roman army: a camp called Castrum Laurentum was quartered here, and from Laurentum to San Lorenzo is a short step.
The second half of the name has a stranger story. In the eighteenth century "della Valle" was added to the town, almost certainly to honour the de Alarcón y Mendoza, marquises of the Valle Siciliana, who were the lords of the place. In the following century the formula was changed to "del Vallo", and this time the reference was no longer the family but the town's castle: the same sound, a different meaning. The Alarcón y Mendoza castle is still there, together with the Jentilino tower and the church of San Lorenzo Martire, built around 1740, with an all-stone bell tower some thirty metres high that is still the tallest thing in the town.
