Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December, the first Sunday of May, and the first Sunday of August
Camini celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas three times a year: on 6 December, the first Sunday of May, and the first Sunday of August.
The name comes from the Greek Kaminion, which means chimney or kiln: pottery was fired here. The village began as an outlying settlement of Stilo, and in 1212 Frederick II gave the district of San Leonte, with its monastery, to the charterhouse of Santo Stefano, which is today the charterhouse of Serra San Bruno. From the past there remain 'A Turri, the sixteenth-century tower, and the church of Santa Maria Assunta with its frescoes; the earthquake of 1783 did the rest, and Camini became a municipality of its own only in 1806.
Camini was going out, like many villages of the Locride, until in 2011 a local cooperative began placing small groups of refugees and asylum seekers in the houses left empty, instead of crowding them into one large centre. Out of that came workshops for pottery, tailoring, carpentry and instrument making, abandoned land was put back under cultivation and wine, grain and oil were made again. By 2023 one resident in five was foreign, the largest communities coming from Afghanistan and Syria. The village of the kiln has started firing pottery again.
