Saint Basil the Great, patron of Cessaniti
📅 Every year, on 2 January
Cessaniti celebrates Saint Basil on 2 January, in the church dedicated to him.
Cessaniti has 3,405 inhabitants in the hinterland of Vibo Valentia, at 428 metres, on the north-eastern slopes of Monte Poro. The name is Byzantine Greek, Kessanitòn, and the shape of the comune is unusual: six hamlets set out along two parallel ridges, with the main village in between. The countryside is what holds the economy up, and on the boundary with Vibo Valentia there is a geological deposit that the records call of national importance.
Monte Poro, which stands above all this, is a low mountain: seven hundred and ten metres, a mild climate, and for that reason inhabited almost to the top, with small villages close to one another. From its pastures comes the pecorino that has the protected designation of origin. That the two ridges are two worlds is something even football says: the main village's team was founded in 2023, and the year after some members left it to found another one, for the hamlet of Pannaconi. Both play in the lowest amateur division, and on the same pitch.
