The patron of Tropea is Maria Santissima di Romania, celebrated twice a year: on 27 March and on 9 September.
They are the two main dates in a calendar that holds many more. On 21 March, for Saint Joseph, a meal is offered to the devout; on Good Friday at dusk the procession of the dead Christ crosses the town; on 3 May comes the Tri da' Cruci, recalling the Finding of the Holy Cross — the name comes from a small temple with three crosses that once stood at the start of via Umberto I — and late in the evening the shape of a camel appears.
