Feast of the Madonna della Neve
📅 Every year, on 5 August
On 5 August Zaccanopoli, a municipality of 802 inhabitants in the province of Vibo Valentia, celebrates its patroness the Madonna della Neve (Our Lady of the Snows) with a procession.
When in 1310, by order of Robert of Anjou, the town of Aramoni was destroyed, those who survived scattered over Monte Poro and founded three villages: Zaccanopoli, Zambrone and Zungri. In the church of the Madonna della Neve there is a stoup that is said to come from Aramoni: they put it on the coat of arms as well.
The name mixes two things: a Greek surname, Zacharòpoulos, and the dialect word zaccanu, which means sheepfold. Sheep and goats are raised here and wheat is grown, and on the arms there are seven ears of corn. The comune was born in 1918, separating from Parghelia. In 1981 an anthropologist, Maria Minicuci, studied here how marriages were arranged and how property passed to the children.
