Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Vazzano celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas with young people gathering through the town's streets at night and local dishes such as ndianu and pizzateia.
It is thought the village was founded by survivors of an older settlement, Subsicinum, that malaria had thinned out. And after the earthquake of 1783 the people moved again, from a place called Belforte down to where the village stands now. It was a casale, first of Arena and then of Soriano; it has been a comune of its own since 1811.
The church of San Nicola was rebuilt after that earthquake, and rebuilt again after the one at the beginning of the twentieth century. On the sixth of December, for the patron saint, the young people gather at night in the streets, and they eat ndianu and pizzateia. As for the name, the scholar Sharo Gambino thinks of an abbey that may have stood here.
