Scisciano

Province: Naples · Region: Campania · Population: 5,775 · Postal code: 80030

The shape of the fields of Scisciano is Roman. In the first century the territory was centuriated, that is divided into regular lots to be assigned to veterans, and the surveyors did their work so well that the orientation of that time can still be read today in the lanes and paths between the holdings. The name comes from there: from Sittianum, the estate of one Sittius, according to the most accepted view.

In 1522 the census of hearths lists the hamlets of the village: La Torre, Casola, San Martino, Li Manganelli, La Corte de li Seti. Some are still there, others are not: Li Manganelli had already vanished before the end of that century, and the Corte de li Seti became a farmstead, today in ruins. A municipality in its own right since 1816, Scisciano is also the village of Luigi Sena, the maternal great-grandfather of Ayrton Senna.
