Mondello's sand is a small tropical paradox: white and powder-fine, it is made of shell fragments from the posidonia meadow at the centre of the gulf — the kind of composition you would expect in the Caribbean, rare anywhere in the Mediterranean. The semicircular bay runs for about 1,500 metres between Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo, each crowned by its own nature reserve.
Palermo's seaside borgata lies seven kilometres from the city centre, separated from it by the Favorita park. In the early twentieth century Mondello was reinvented as a garden city: the Liberty villas and bathing architecture of Ernesto Basile's school make it a stop on the Mediterranean Art Nouveau trail, protected by landscape restrictions since 1967.
