Civitella Messer Raimondo

Province: Chieti · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 861 · Postal code: 66010

Until 1863 the village was called simply Civitella, like a good many others; then it took the name of the man who had held the castle in the first half of the fifteenth century, Raimondo d'Annecchino, and with it the «messere» by which he was addressed. The arms show an uprooted oak with the old name written on a band across the trunk, and two letters, S and M, that the sources do not explain.

Below the village people have followed one another without a break: rock paintings in the cave of La Pineta, prehistoric tombs with bronze grave goods, and a Roman bath house with mosaics on the hill they call Il Piano. Today people come down to the Aventino to go rafting, which is the last thing anyone expects here.
