Down in the plain lie the ruins of Juvanum: the Samnite town, come down from the ridge and turned into a Roman municipium, with its theatre dug into the flank of the hill. Up on the rock above the village the Samnites' megalithic walls are still there, dry stone. After the earthquake of 1933, to put the parish church back up, the villagers used Roman columns taken from Juvanum.
Benedetto Croce said his family came from here, and Palazzo Croce still stands in the village; in December 1943 the Gustav line ran through and half the town was destroyed, the upper part of that palace with it. From here, in 1891, a young man named Tommaso D'Alessandro left for Baltimore: his son became mayor of that city and his granddaughter, Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the American House.
