Colledimacine

Province: Chieti · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 237 · Postal code: 66010

The name puts together two Latin words, the hill and the millstone. The first reliable records are in the Angevin registers of 1269, when the village was the fief of three families; then it changed hands several times, down to the Barbolani, who turned the medieval castle into a residence while keeping its sixteenth-century doorway. The slope is so steep that the palace has three storeys on its main front and two on the rest of the building: here the house adapts to the mountain, not the other way round.

In via Roma stands the municipal fountain, with the date cut into the top: 1893. It is made of two parts, the block with its five spouts and the washhouse bay, and today the upper part has been restored while the lower has not. Between the end of 1943 and the beginning of 1944 the village found itself right behind the Gustav Line and came out of it badly damaged; for the sacrifices of its people and for the partisan struggle it was awarded the war cross for military valour. The patron is Saint Marianus, celebrated on the eleventh of August: neither of the two churches bears his name.
