Treglio

Province: Chieti · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 1,575 · Postal code: 66030

The name comes from a Latin personal name, Trellus. Like many villages around here, Treglio was a fief of the abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, and it appears in a papal bull of 1173 under the name of Santa Maria in grotta Trinia. Later the casale was sacked by the men of Lanciano, in their rivalry with the abbot, and from then on the village followed Lanciano's fortunes. In 1807, under Joachim Murat, Treglio was merged with four neighbouring villages into a single comune called the Comune of the Villas of Lanciano; in 1816, once Murat had fallen, Treglio, Santa Maria Imbaro and Mozzagrogna took their autonomy back. That comune had lasted nine years, exactly as long as the regime that had made it.

The parish church has a documented history of attempts. On the twenty-sixth of April 1802 king Ferdinand granted permission to enlarge it; in 1818 someone wrote asking for the funds needed to make it bigger; an architect drew up a plan, and the plan was dropped for lack of money. The bell tower was built only in the twentieth century, along with the repair of the inner chapel of the Crucifix and the new finishings. The village is small — four square kilometres — and sits on three hills: the old centre on the middle one, and on the other two the contrade of Sacchetti and Paglieroni, born in the eighteen hundreds. The sea is five kilometres away. In November the old centre fills with country cellars for the feast of the new wine, the new oil and the chestnuts.
