Feast of Saint Eustace
📅 Every year, on 20 and 21 September
On 20 September Campo di Giove celebrates Saint Eustace with a procession; the evening of the next day brings the "ballo della pupa", an ancient farming ritual for a good harvest.
The name comes from a temple to Jupiter raised here around three hundred before Christ, and the legend says why. Peligni and Romans were fighting not far off; the Peligni already thought themselves the winners when a storm broke and turned the day over. The Romans, having won more by the rain than by their own skill, thanked Jupiter and built him the temple.
It is the highest village of the Maiella park, and the mountain has sent in its bill: the earthquake of 1706 had its epicentre in the fault right above the village and brought down almost every house. A little way off lies the lake Ticino, a karst pond that in 1317 stood in the deeds under the name stagnum lucosanum, and served to water the fields.
