Feast of Saint Gemma
📅 Every year, on 11, 12 and 13 May
On 11, 12 and 13 May Goriano Sicoli, a municipality of 597 inhabitants in the province of L'Aquila, celebrates its patroness Saint Gemma, known as Gemma Reclusa (the Recluse).
On seventeenth-century maps kept in the archives of L'Aquila the village is called «Gordianum Siccum», the dry Gordiano: the mountains around it form a horseshoe that blocks the currents, the clouds unload in the valley below and up here it rains little. The olive, which grows easily at Raiano, does not take at Goriano.
In 1929 Maurits Cornelis Escher, then travelling through the Abruzzo, made a lithograph of the village: the print now hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Those were the years when people left here for America and Argentina, boarding at Naples or Genoa, and those who came back bought land and built themselves a house.
