Ortona dei Marsi

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 592 · Postal code: 67050

Between the hamlets of Cesoli and Rivoli stood Milonia, a fortified town of the Marsi that the Romans razed during the Third Samnite War. From there came the gens Poppedia and Quintus Poppaedius Silo, who led the Marsi against Rome in the Social War; in 1814, on the bank of the Giovenco, the gravestone of a Poppedia Secunda came to light.

The diploma of Alife of 1273 divided the Abruzzo in two, and the boundary ran right across the territory of Ortona, which remained in the Ultra until 1807. In 1756 the village asked the pope for leave to take relics from the catacombs of San Sebastiano in Rome, and three years later the remains of the martyr Generoso arrived.
