Feast of San Domenico Abate
📅 Every year, on 21 and 22 August
On 21 and 22 August Villalago, a municipality of 589 inhabitants in the province of L'Aquila, celebrates its patron San Domenico Abate.
In 1900 Antonio De Nino pulled twenty-six small bronze statues of Hercules out of the fields north of the village, with club and lion skin: it was a small sanctuary, of the kind that in the Sagittario valley turned up everywhere. The place is called Villa and not Castrum because it was never walled: Villa de Lacu, the village of the lake.
The monastery that put the lake into its name was built by saint Dominic the abbot between 1001 and 1026, at the request of the counts of Valva; by 1065 it was already drawn on the bronze door of Montecassino among the abbey's main possessions, and the monks left it in 1474. Above the Sagittario gorges the hermitage of San Domenico remains, and further down lake Scanno, born of a landslide from monte Genzana.
