Alba Adriatica

Province: Teramo · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 11,565 · Postal code: 64011

Alba Adriatica has 11,565 inhabitants on the Teramo coast, and it is a very young town: until 1956 it was Tortoreto Stazione, a quarter of the comune of Tortoreto that had grown up around the stop opened in 1863 on the first Adriatic railway of the Kingdom of Italy. That year a referendum detached it, and the committee that had won the campaign also had to find it a name: it chose Alba, with Adriatica added so as not to be confused with the one in Piedmont.

On the coat of arms there is a sun rising out of the sea, and it means exactly what it looks like: a new community being born on the Adriatic. Of the more distant past little is left: some Neolithic sites over towards Ripoli, the amphorae and the salt collection points that turned up when viale Mazzini was opened in the sixties, and above all the tower on the Vibrata, raised in 1568 by the Spanish viceroy of Naples to watch out for the Saracens. The rest are the eighteenth and nineteenth-century villas of the Ranalli, the Fiore, the De Sanctis.
