The patron of Controguerra is Saint Benedict the Abbot, celebrated on 21 March.
In 1497 the town, occupied by pro-French forces, was besieged by the troops of Ettore Fieramosca; on 4 November 1556 it was sacked by Francesco Carafa, son of the count of Montorio. Between the last week of July and the first of August, since 1985, the food and wine festival «Tradizioni e Sapori di Controguerra» has been held, one of the longest-running sagre in Abruzzo, with typical dishes of the Abruzzese and Marche traditions. The town holds the Torrione, the Church of San Francesco and the Fonte Lu Pisciarill.
