Feast of Saint Flavian
📅 Every year, on 24 November
On 24 November Torano Nuovo celebrates its patron Saint Flavian, Patriarch of Constantinople and martyr; the town is home to the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie.
The name is traced back to Turan, an ancient goddess of fertility. The village, in the Val Vibrata, was a border castle between the Kingdom of Naples and the Papal State: the frontier ran through here, among the villages Torano still borders today — Controguerra, Nereto, Sant'Omero, Ancarano and Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata. In the war the sources call del Gesso, in the days of the descent of Charles VIII, Torano was almost entirely devastated; the rebuilding, and it was a considerable one, was done by the inhabitants themselves, determined to stay on their own land rather than go elsewhere.
Of that rebuilt village there remain the parish church of the Madonna delle Grazie and two country churches, San Massimo at Varano and San Martino at Torri, a museum of sacred art, the war memorial that everybody calls «Cello» and a widening of the street that the guides list simply as the piazzetta. Since 12 August 2007 the comune has been twinned with Cacabelos, in Spain. And the name most often heard outside the valley today is not that of a lord or of a saint, but of a winemaker: Emidio Pepe.
