Scanzano Jonico

Province: Matera · Region: Basilicata · Population: 7,171 · Postal code: 75020

In November 2003 the government picked Scanzano as the single national store for nuclear waste, in a coastal district a few metres above sea level. The town took to the streets for two weeks — the giorni di Scanzano — and the decree was withdrawn: the seismic rating of the area and its closeness to the sea both counted.

Scanzano has only been a comune since 1974: before that it was a hamlet of Montalbano, repopulated in the 1950s under the land reform. On the beach stands the Turris Hischinzanae, a sixteenth-century watchtower built against pirates and later a lighthouse for fishermen: of the six that guarded this coast it is the only one still standing properly. There are 7,171 residents now, between strawberries and beach tourism.
