Rotondella

Province: Matera · Region: Basilicata · Population: 2,707 · Postal code: 75026

At Rotondella they tell of the Monachella, a mischievous little woman with long hair who hides things about the house, wakes people from their sleep and knots the manes of horses. The rule is that if you manage to catch her she brings luck to the house, the work and the family. The same story is told at Nova Siri and Montalbano Jonico.

The town is called the balcony of the Ionian: from here you see the whole gulf of Taranto, from Puglia to Calabria. In 1261 it was Rotunda Maris, the round one of the sea. Of the castle Ferrante Sanseverino had built in the sixteenth century the Torre del Carcere is left, and today it holds the town library and the historical archive. There are 2,707 residents.
