In 1501 the representatives of the refugees who had come from the Balkans presented themselves to the commendatory abbot of Santa Maria di San Leucio and obtained leave to stay: an agreement of twenty-six points was signed, laying down where the village was to be built, in contrada Arioso, and on what terms. The census of that year counts twenty-two hearths, and the surnames of that day are still the commonest in the place.
The arms tell the same story in two lines: below, two wavy blue bands, the water that is in the name, and above, on red, the black double-headed eagle with the golden helmet of Skanderbeg over it. Arbëresh is still spoken here and mass is still said in the Byzantine rite, under the eparchy of Lungro; at Carnival they dance the vallje, which sing Skanderbeg's victory over the Turks.
