Castroregio

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 345 · Postal code: 87070

The name says «castle of the king»: a document of 1015 mentions a monastery here and a Kastron, and in 1239 Frederick II ordered its restoration — from then on that castle was called Regium. Then the plague of 1348 emptied half of Calabria, and into the deserted hamlets came, after the fall of Scutari in 1479, the Albanians in flight: they found the castle in ruins and used its stones for their own houses.

Around 1710 nine families, thirty-three people, left in order not to pay taxes and founded a small hamlet further down the valley: for almost a century it took in other fugitives, then its inhabitants became citizens of the neighbouring comune and their Arbëreshë identity was lost. What remains of it is the ruin of a little church and its baptismal font. Up here, instead, the Albanian language and the Greek-Byzantine rite are still alive.
