Fagnano Castello has 3,949 inhabitants at five hundred and sixteen metres, on the slopes of Monte Caloria, on the eastern side of the Coastal Range. The origin of the name has always been argued over: Vincenzo Padula traced it back to the Hebrew hanan, fog, because of the mountain — and fog here there really is a great deal of; the glottologist Gerhard Rohlfs preferred the Latin Fannianum praedium, the estate of Fannius. Roman denarii of 123 before Christ have turned up to prove him right, bearing the letters M.FAN.C.F, Marcus Fannius Caii Filius.

The «Castello» of the name is a mystery: the tower was still there after 1861, when the addition served to distinguish the town from the other Fagnanos of Italy, but where it stood has been lost along the way; recent excavations have found certain circular foundations. In 1096 ten or twelve men of Fagnano followed Bohemond of Hauteville, born in nearby San Marco Argentano, on the First Crusade, and probably died under Antioch. Three ravines cross the town: under the bridge of one of them, in 1932, a power station was installed.
