Fuscaldo

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 8,072 · Postal code: 87024

The name may come from the Latin fons calidus, warm spring, for the thermal springs of the area, or else from a medieval personal name, Foscoaldus. Of the mother church the foundation is unknown, but the day the high altar was consecrated is: the fifth of June 1166, by the archbishop of Cosenza, who placed in it the relics of four martyrs. A plaque inside the church says so. It was the Università, that is the municipality, that built it and paid for its repairs until 1749.

The church of the Immacolata has a bell tower thirty-five metres high that is a display of skill by the stonecutters of Fuscaldo: twelve fluted tufa columns with Corinthian capitals, three at each corner. Inside, the altarpiece was painted in 1748 by Giuseppe Pascaletti, of Fiumefreddo.
