The tragic clowns of Ruggero Leoncavallo's renowned opera Pagliacci play out their drama in Montalto Uffugo, the town where the composer spent his childhood. Known simply as Montalto until the 1860s, the municipality appended Uffugo after Italian unification in a nod to Aufugum, the ancient settlement believed to have stood on this exact site.
