It is a village entirely of the mountains: the territory runs from eight hundred to twelve hundred metres, and the houses stand at nine hundred. On its foundation the source does not commit itself — probably the middle of the seventeenth century — which in Calabria is a recent date. The patron is Saint Charles Borromeo, and from his motto comes the word the comune chose for itself.
The coat of arms, granted in 1999, is a small dictionary of the village: the black potent cross is the emblem of the province of Cosenza, the golden bell stands for brotherhood, the chestnuts for what the land gives, and the motto is Humilitas, «humility», that of Saint Charles Borromeo. The name of the village speaks of bakers; in the arms, instead, the inhabitants put chestnuts.
