Cicala

Province: Catanzaro · Region: Calabria · Population: 1,008 · Postal code: 88040

The village was called Castriota. In 1610 the fief of Tiriolo was bought by the Genoese Carlo Cigala, and six years later the men of the Trempa di Castagna asked him to found a hamlet here with their own charters of immunity: from then on the place took the count's name, Cigala, which in time became Cicala, the word for cicada. On the coat of arms, sure enough, there is the insect, flying over a chestnut tree with golden chestnuts.

In 1806, after the risings against the French, Cicala was burnt: the town archive begins exactly there, with the years around 1810, because nothing earlier survived. Today the village holds Casa Paese, a community for people with dementia built like a real village, with its bar, its newsstand, its shop and its square; it opened in October 2022.
