Pietrapaola

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 1,173 · Postal code: 87060

The old village stands between two crags: the Rupe del Salvatore, where you climb by steps cut in the rock to the Grotta del Principe, and the Timpa del Castello, which held a fortress inside it. On the Arco del Cimitero an inscription of 1644 records the Turkish raids. Outside the village run the Muraglie di Annibale, Bruttian walls of the fourth and third centuries before Christ, in places three metres high.

Then the village moved. From the sixties the people went down to the sea, where the state road and the Ionian railway pass, and there the hamlet of Camigliano grew, which everyone calls Marina di Pietrapaola. Today almost everyone lives below: in the old centre, at the start of 2021, about a hundred people were left.
