Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua
📅 Every year, on 13 June
On 13 June Scala Coeli, a municipality of 1,141 inhabitants in the province of Cosenza, celebrates its patron Saint Anthony of Padua.
The name can be read in two languages and says two things: in Latin Scala coeli, the stair of heaven; in Byzantine Greek Skàla Koìle, the hollow stair. For centuries people let the «coeli» drop, and the whole name came back only in the nineteenth century. The arms draw the thing: a black ladder set slantwise, and below it three green hills.
Vincenzo Padula described it as a walled hill girt with crags and caves, entered by four gates opened at dawn and closed at sunset: Portavavuza, Portafischìa, Portapiano and Portello. It was a village of churches too: after 1437, with the new diocese of Cariati, seven of them were counted, and a Franciscan convent besides.
