San Lorenzo Bellizzi

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 746 · Postal code: 87070

The village was called Bellizzia, after the castle of the Bellizzi barons, who had also founded the chapel of San Lorenzo; in 1534 it passed to the Pignatelli, marquises of Cerchiara. In the cave of Pietra Sant'Angelo traces have been found of people already living there in the neolithic.

Below the village open the gorges of the Raganello, a long canyon the torrent has cut into the rock, and all around are the timpe: walls that rise straight up, that of San Lorenzo, that of Cassano, that of the Falconara. After the unification of Italy, in these mountains, the brigands used to meet.
