Plataci

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 830 · Postal code: 87070

The Albanians settled here around 1476, in a hamlet the older inhabitants had probably left after the earthquake of 1456; the name would come from the Greek platanià, the plane wood. At Plataci Arbëresh is still spoken, the rite is the Greek-Byzantine one, and the walls of the village are painted with scenes of the Albanian world.

The municipal archives burned a century ago, in a fire never explained, but the memory has stayed in the feasts: the wedding procession with the zampogna and the gala costumes, the festival of the little Arbëresh singers, the Madonna of Constantinople celebrated twice a year. On the last day of February the young people drag through the streets a string of tins tied together, making a din meant to drive the winter away.
