Trebisacce

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 8,734 · Postal code: 87075

The name comes from the Greek trapezakion, little table, that is a tableland: the town sits on a natural terrace seventy-three metres above the sea. Not far off, in the Broglio district, stood one of the earliest protohistoric villages of Calabria, with finds going back to the twelfth century before Christ.

The dialect of Trebisacce is a rarity. It belongs to what is called the Lausberg area, after the German linguist who studied it: a linguistic zone so conservative that it has features in common with Sardinian, because Latin arrived here late, since Greek went on being spoken, and when it did arrive it was preserved better than elsewhere. Another mark left by the past is medical: the coast was marshy and malarial until the nineteenth century, and from that history comes one of the highest rates of favism in Italy.
