Feast of Our Lady of Constantinople
📅 Every year, on 21 November
On 21 November Vaccarizzo Albanese celebrates its patron Our Lady of Constantinople, also known as the Madonna of the herdsmen.
The village came into being around 1470, when Albanian refugees, after the death of Skanderbeg and the Turkish advance, settled on these hills. For a long time they lived in huts of branches, and often burned them themselves so as not to be counted by the tax officers. Only in 1669, with the church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, did the first houses of stone appear.
On the main square stand two parish churches with the same name, one of the Greek-Byzantine rite and one of the Latin, with two baptismal fonts. The Arbëresh spoken here has kept old forms of the Tosk on which today's Albanian is built. The word «Albanese» was added to the village's name in the nineteenth century, to record where it had come from.
