Acri

Province: Cosenza · Region: Calabria · Population: 21,458 · Postal code: 87041

On 15 October 2017 Pope Francis canonised Saint Angelo of Acri, the Capuchin preacher who set the squares of the Kingdom of Naples ablaze in the eighteenth century: the basilica holding his remains makes Acri a pilgrimage destination for all of Calabria. The town's name comes from the Greek ákra, "the peak", and its position proves the point.

Sitting above 700 metres between the Mucone and Calamo valleys, the town of 21,458 residents is one of the gateways to the Greek Sila plateau. A contemporary art museum inside a noble palazzo adds an unexpected note to this mountain balcony.
