Cittanova

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 10,344 · Postal code: 89022

Cittanova was born of a proclamation: on the twelfth of August 1618 the prince of Gerace, Girolamo Grimaldi, ordered a new casale to be built where earthquakes had emptied the villages around, and whoever came to live there was granted exemptions. It was called Casalnuovo, and the houses were deliberately built very low, for fear of the shocks that would come back.

They came back. On the fifth of February 1783 the earthquake they call the Flagello here wiped out the town and killed two thousand and seventeen people out of five thousand five hundred and ninety, the princess Maria Teresa Grimaldi among them. Casalnuovo was rebuilt on the same spot, and in 1852 a decree of Ferdinand the Second gave it the name it still bears. On the coat of arms there is a pine: it was a real tree, as old as the town, burned by lightning in 1960.
