The Normans chose this eagle's crag five hundred metres above the sea to build Calabria's largest cathedral, consecrated in 1045: three naves on ancient salvaged columns, carried up — it is said — from Greek Locri Epizefiri, the mother city on the coast. Gerace is a museum-village of Byzantine churches and stone portals.
