The Normans chose this eagle's crag five hundred metres above the sea to build Calabria's largest cathedral, consecrated in 1045: three naves on ancient salvaged columns, carried up — it is said — from Greek Locri Epizefiri, the mother city on the coast. Gerace is a museum-village of Byzantine churches and stone portals.
From the Bombarde belvedere the gaze runs from the Ionian to the Aspromonte massif. Ceramics workshops, silences and cats complete one of Italy's most beautiful villages — the kind where time has simply decided not to hurry.
