Rizziconi

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 7,806 · Postal code: 89016

The name most probably comes from a man: Rizzo Cordopatri, who arrived in Calabria in 1269 and was really called Rizzo Capece, having taken that nickname from a motto of his. Rizzi conit would mean founded by Rizzo. The village is said to have been born of the refugees from Tauriana and Metauria, destroyed around the middle of the tenth century.

The hamlet of Drosi was Drusium, a Roman posting station on the via Popilia, the road that led to the crossing for Sicily. Its church of San Martino was a commandery of the Knights of Malta from 1555 and rose again after the earthquake of 1783, which had brought down every church in the district; inside there is a sixteenth-century ciborium and an alabaster statue of the Baptist, recovered in 1936 and kept in the museum of Reggio Calabria until 2007, when it came back here. On the sixth of September 1943 Rizziconi was the scene of a massacre carried out by the retreating German troops.
