Italy's largest port was born from a factory that never came: in the seventies a steelworks was to rise here, olive groves and fields were expropriated, then the project collapsed and only the dug basin was left. After years of silence, that basin has become one of the Mediterranean's major container terminals.
Before all this there was Metauros, a Greek colony of the seventh century BC: the poet Stesichorus was born here in 630, and vases from the digs have ended up as far away as the Metropolitan in New York. The present name dates from 1863, when Tauro was added to Gioja in memory of the Greek city. There are 19,063 residents.
