Staiti

Province: Reggio Calabria · Region: Calabria · Population: 279 · Postal code: 89030

It is the least populous comune in Calabria, and the smallest community of the Greek-speaking area, where the Greek of Calabria is still spoken: here the village is called Stàti. It has not always been like this: Staiti once counted around fifteen hundred inhabitants, many more than it has now. It was born towards the sixteenth century as a lookout post, and took its name from the family that bought and fortified it.

Outside the built-up area stands Santa Maria di Tridetti, a national monument: a church of the first Norman times, built however on a Greek plan because it served the rite of the Basilian monks, and in the presbytery the pointed arch and the round arch stand side by side — two ways of building, and two worlds, in the same wall. Of the monastery it belonged to nothing at all remains.
