Saint Nicholas of Bari, patron of Briatico
📅 Every year, on 6 December
Briatico celebrates Saint Nicholas of Bari on 6 December, one of its patrons alongside the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Briatico has 3,983 inhabitants on the rocks of the Costa degli Dei, facing the gulf of Sant'Eufemia. The old name is Euriatikòn: so Roger the Norman calls it in a bull of the twelfth century, and so it returns in ten medieval parchments. Under the municipal coat of arms there is a date in Roman numerals, 1494: it is the year Briatico became a free city, governed by a mayor. It did not last: two years later the fief already belonged to the Spanish de Castro Bisbal.
The earthquake of 1783 razed the old town. On the fourth of April that year the nine hundred and twenty-five survivors gathered on the beach, below the tower they call la Rocchetta, and decided where to rebuild: at contrada San Giovanni, land of duke Ettore Maria Pignatelli, who had his own vineyards cut down to clear the ground and ordered eight large barracks for the poorest families. The new town was laid out on a grid, with its corners turned to the cardinal points, so that it would hold at the next tremor.
