Limbadi

Province: Vibo Valentia · Region: Calabria · Population: 3,498 · Postal code: 89844

Limbadi has 3,498 inhabitants on the southern slope of Monte Poro, and the name comes from the Greek libadion, the meadow. For centuries it was the outskirts of Motta Filocastro, the older centre, but it grew until the relationship was turned upside down: after the earthquake of 1783 the village was rebuilt to a plan, and in 1807 a law moved the seat of the comune from Motta to Limbadi. Then for a few years it went back to being a hamlet of Motta, and autonomy arrived for good on the first of January 1830.

Under fascism Limbadi was a place of political internal exile and took in 38 people persecuted by the regime: in 2015 the town council granted all thirty-eight honorary citizenship in memoriam. At Motta there remain the ruins of the Franciscan convent put up in 1535 by father Ludovico of Reggio Calabria, who brought the Capuchin reform to the whole of Calabria. Today the village lives on oil, wine and citrus, and it has a liqueur works out of which comes the most famous amaro in Calabria.
